Sunil Gavaskar praises Shubman Gill’s all-round ability, calling his defence ‘solid’ as well as his attack

India opener Shubman Gill has been praised for his impressive performance in the first innings of the fourth and final Test of the series against Australia by none other than the legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar. Gill played a crucial role in putting India in a commanding position on Day 3, reaching his half-century off 90 balls and putting on a 74-run opening stand with Rohit Sharma.

Despite a poor outing in the third Test, Gill bounced back in style and received accolades from fans and Gavaskar alike. The former Indian cricketer commended Gill’s solid defence and not just his attack, saying that in Test cricket, having a solid defence is essential.

“Shuffling back and forth against pace bowlers isn’t very easy. But he picks the lines and lengths really well. If a batter has time, if he keeps his career in the right direction, he can easily score 8-10,000 runs in Tests,” Gavaskar said during the post-lunch conversation on Star Sports.

Gill’s performance has given India a chance to stay in the ongoing fourth Test, as they are still behind Australia in terms of the first innings deficit. The hosts will be relying on Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja to help them reach close to Australia’s first innings score of 480.
