Australia’s cricket team showcased their batting prowess on the first day of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by scoring 255/4 in 90 overs at stumps at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Opting to bat first, the team put forth their best batting display, with opening batter Usman Khawaja leading the charge with an unbeaten century. Khawaja’s brilliant performance will see him resume batting with Cameron Green, who is at 49*, on Day 2.
Despite the impressive showing by Australia, veteran India wicketkeeper batter Dinesh Karthik expressed his dissatisfaction with the tactics of skipper Rohit Sharma on Day 1. Karthik opined that while Sharma was proactive in his field placings and kept things tight, he failed with his tricks at the end of the day. “After the first hour, he pulled it back, got 4 wickets. Then during that middle phase when Smith and Khawaja were playing, he held it tight and didn’t give them easy boundaries,” Karthik said. However, Karthik also noted that Sharma’s decision not to use the usual method of keeping silly point and short leg was a positive aspect of his captaincy.
