The captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), KL Rahul, has voiced his opinion that the importance of “strike rate” in cricket’s shortest format is “over-rated” ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. During the unveiling of LSG’s new kit on March 7, Rahul gave his take on the subject of maintaining a high strike rate as a batter in T20 cricket.
According to Rahul, the key to maintaining an effective strike rate is to consider the current scenario of the match. If a team is chasing a low score, then there is no need for batters to go all-out and attempt to score at a rate of 200 or more. Instead, they should adjust their game based on the demands of the situation.
“I think the strike rate is over-rated. But it depends upon the demand, like if you chase 140, you don’t need to go with 200 strike rate. It depends upon the current situation. There are players in the team that we will encourage to play their natural game and there will be certain players in the team to take the responsibility of seeing the team through. So, it is based entirely on that particular day and on that particular situation,” said Rahul at the event.
Rahul’s comments come as a refreshing change in a format where batters are often judged solely on their strike rate. Rahul himself is a prolific run-scorer in the IPL and has been a consistent performer for his franchise over the years. The LSG will be hoping that Rahul’s leadership and his approach to the game will help them achieve success in the upcoming season of the IPL.
