IPL 2023 – 3 Players who are the best alternatives to Kyle Jamieson at CSK

Kyle Jamieson’s signing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction came as a massive boost for the side, but sadly, the towering pacer is unlikely to feature in the upcoming season due to a recurring back injury. The injury has kept the 28-year-old out of action since June last year and has now forced him to undergo surgery, sidelining him for approximately four months.

Jamieson’s numbers in international cricket speak volumes about his ability. He has been a proven performer across formats, having claimed 72 scalps in 16 Test matches at an average of 19.45, while also picking up 11 wickets in eight ODIs at an economy rate of 4.31.

CSK would now need to find a replacement for the Kiwi speedster in their bowling attack. While it remains to be seen who they will opt for, there are some top-drawer players who might be on the radar of captain MS Dhoni and the team management. With Jamieson set to miss out on the action, the onus will be on the Chennai-based franchise to identify a player who can fill his shoes and bolster their bowling attack ahead of the new season.

Number 1. Riley Meredith

Australian fast bowler Riley Meredith’s consistent performances in the T20 format have made him a sought-after player in various leagues. With 100 wickets to his name in 77 T20 games at an economy of 8.33, the 26-year-old has proven his mettle. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Meredith has 12 scalps in 13 matches, maintaining an economy of 9.00.

Meredith’s exceptional performances in the recent edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) have further enhanced his reputation. Representing Hobart Hurricanes, the fast bowler picked up 21 wickets in 14 matches at an economy of 8.10. With his ability to consistently clock speeds of over 140 kmph, Meredith’s fiery pace has rattled many a batsman.

In light of Kyle Jamieson’s unavailability due to his recurring back injury, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could turn to Meredith to strengthen their pace attack. The addition of the Australian will provide CSK with another dimension to their bowling unit, making it more rounded. Given his current form, Meredith could be signed by CSK as an injury replacement for Jamieson.

Number 2. Wayne Parnell

Wayne Parnell is a versatile player in the T20 format, known for his ability to deceive batsmen with his variations, dismantle strong bowling attacks, and contribute valuable runs with the bat. The 33-year-old left-arm pacer poses a threat in the power play with his ability to swing the new ball, and can also deliver toe-crushing yorkers at the death.

Parnell’s track record in T20s speaks for itself – he has taken 257 wickets in 254 games at an economy of 7.81 and scored 1881 runs at a strike rate of 123.91. He has also been impressive in T20Is for South Africa, claiming 57 scalps in 53 matches at an economy of 8.11.

With his left-arm pace and all-round abilities, Parnell could add depth and variety to Chennai Super Kings’ pace attack. Therefore, it’s possible that the Chennai franchise may consider acquiring his services for the upcoming 16th edition of the Indian Premier League.
