Former India cricketer and current commentator Ravi Shastri has showered praise on James Anderson for his exceptional work ethic and longevity in international cricket. Anderson recently became the world number one bowler in Tests, ending Pat Cummins’ four-year reign at the top.
Shastri, who closely watched Anderson’s performances during his tenure as India coach, lauded the Englishman’s professionalism and dedication towards his craft. Speaking in an episode of the ICC Review, Shastri revealed that Anderson’s work ethic was something he admired the most.
“Even in Indian conditions, there were times he didn’t play in India. But he would go out to bowl at lunch or straight after the day’s play or before the day’s play,” Shastri said.
The former India all-rounder said that he was not surprised at Anderson’s rise to the top of the rankings, as he deserved the position in every aspect. He recalled how he used to encourage Indian bowlers to emulate Anderson’s professionalism and work ethic.
Anderson’s fitness levels were another attribute that Shastri lauded. At the age of 40, Anderson’s accuracy and fitness levels were still superior to many young cricketers, according to Shastri.
“These are real professionals, and a stickler for fitness. You can’t play at 40 and produce these kinds of results unless you are supremely fit. So, hats off! Well done, Jimmy. He’s a role model. He inspires so many. Leave alone batters playing at the age of 40, but for a fast bowler to play at 40, you just salute it,” Shastri added.
Anderson’s performance against New Zealand in the first Test helped England register a comprehensive victory, and he was rightfully rewarded with the number one spot in the ICC men’s Test bowlers’ rankings. Shastri’s admiration for Anderson’s work ethic and professionalism serves as an inspiration to many young cricketers who aspire to make it to the top level of the sport.
