David Warner appointed as Delhi Capitals’ captain in place of Rishabh Pant

David Warner has been announced as the new captain of the Delhi Capitals for the upcoming Indian Premier League season, in the absence of Rishabh Pant. The Indian skipper has been ruled out of the tournament after sustaining severe injuries in an accident last year. Australian opener Warner will take over the reins, while all-rounder Axar Patel has been appointed as his deputy.

Axar, who has been in great form across all formats, will be expected to contribute equally with the bat and ball. He has been impressive in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy and has emerged as a top all-rounder.

Warner was signed by the Delhi Capitals for INR 6.25 crore after being released by the Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the previous season. He played the opener’s role brilliantly, scoring 432 runs in 12 games, including five half-centuries and a high score of 92 not out against his former franchise.

Warner has been a regular in the Indian Premier League for more than a decade and has played in 13 editions of the tournament. He also has experience leading an IPL team, having captained the Sunrisers Hyderabad to their maiden title in 2016. Although the Delhi Capitals are yet to make an official announcement, Warner’s appointment is expected to boost the team’s chances of success in the upcoming season.
