Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli has been praised by former cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Gautam Gambhir for his impressive performance on Day 3 of the second Test against Australia. Despite struggling to score runs in the previous two matches, Kohli became the fastest cricketer to score 25,000 runs in international cricket, achieving the milestone in just 549 innings.
Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar, who took 577 innings to achieve the feat, and beat the records of other cricketing greats including Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, Kumar Sangakkara, and Mahela Jayawardena. The 34-year-old’s last century in Test cricket came in 2019 against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens.
While Kohli’s century drought in the longest format of the game continues, Gavaskar and Gambhir are impressed with his batting and believe that he is close to breaking the century jinx. Speaking about Kohli’s achievement, Gambhir praised the cricketer for his consistent performance in different conditions.
“The best part of Virat Kohli is that he has performed the same in India and in Australia, in South Africa. Kohli is a master of the 50-overs format but in Test cricket too he has scored 27 hundreds, and 28 fifties. He has centuries in England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies. What more can you achieve?” Gambhir said on Star Sports.
Gambhir added that scoring 25,000 international runs is no small feat and Kohli’s consistent performance in spite of the changes in his game, technique, strengths and weaknesses, mode of dismissals, and emotions is what makes him a great cricketer.
