How Anil Kumble’s smart tips helped Devika Vaidya become a better bowler

Indian spin-bowling all-rounder Devika Vaidya has recently shared an experience of meeting the legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble during her Under-19 days. In an interview with former India cricketer Aakash Chopra on Jio Cinema’s new daily show ‘#AAKASHVANI,’ Vaidya disclosed the details of the meeting and spoke about the conversation she had with Kumble, which left her awestruck by his humbleness.

According to Vaidya, she was playing Under-19s in 2014 and had just been selected in the senior inter-zonal team when one of her father’s colleagues offered to introduce them to Anil Kumble. Vaidya’s parents were not expecting that the former Indian cricketer would sit with them and talk for almost two hours. She had brought some clips of her bowling and batting to show him.

Vaidya further shared that Kumble advised her never to change her action, no matter what others said, and gave her some valuable tips on using a straighter, flipper, and leg-spin. She also revealed that the legendary bowler advised her to use variations properly and keep the batter guessing.

Vaidya’s encounter with Kumble has stayed with her all these years, and she believes the advice he gave her will continue to be useful in the future.

In other news, Vaidya was recently bought by the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League auction, with bidding going up to INR 1.4 crore from her base price of INR 40 lakh, as both Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz showed interest in acquiring her.

The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League will commence on March 4, with the first match scheduled between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Stadium.
