Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s right-arm off spinner, celebrated fellow teammate Mohammed Shami’s dismissal of Nathan Lyon in one of the most bizarre, yet hilarious ways, which shocked Shami and left everyone watching in splits.
The second Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 has begun at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on February 17. Australia appears desperate to turn things around, having fallen behind India 0-1 and with the race to the World Test Championship finals heating up.
The incident occurred during Australia’s 75th over, when Mohammed Shami was bowling to Nathan Lyon, who was eight down with 246 runs on the board. Shami dashed in to deliver, and he did so with a fuller delivery and a hint of shape.
The ball was delivered with such precision that Lyon failed to read and react in time, allowing the ball to pass through his defence and dislodge both the off and middle stumps. Lyon became Shami’s third victim of the innings.
With Lyon’s dismissal, all of the Indian players ran to gather around Shami and congratulate him, as is customary. Ravichandran Ashwin approached Shami from behind and casually twisted both of her ears. Shami was stunned, while the veteran spinner laughed and relished the moment.
The incident had everyone in stitches, with even legend Sunil Gavaskar from the commentary box unable to contain his excitement and commenting on Ashwin and Shami’s friendship. Gavaskar went on to say that Ashwin was most likely planning another unique delivery against Australia.
“I think if you asked Ashwin later, he’d say he was practising another type of delivery,” the 70-year-old said.
