Suryakumar Yadav, a flamboyant hitter, made his Test debut in the opening match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2022-23. He did not capitalise on the occasion, though, as the Mumbai-born hitter was despatched for just eight runs. Experienced spinner Nathan Lyon got the better of him, and the debate about his future in Test cricket has resurfaced, particularly with consistent Sarfaraz Khan on the sidelines.
Notably, the 25-year-old scored 556 runs in six Ranji Trophy matches. Playing in the middle order, Sarafaraz played some wonderful cricket, and former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin feels he deserves to play Test cricket, but he’s not sure why Khan isn’t in the team right now.
“I’m certain that he (Sarfaraz Khan) will get his opportunity. It’s not like he won’t have another shot. To be honest, I’m not sure what the selections or skipper are thinking. “He’s done so well,” the 60-year-old told the Hindustan Times.
Nevertheless, despite his poor performance in the first innings, the former cricketer has endorsed Suryakumar Yadav and expressed his desire to see more of him in Test cricket.
“Suryakumar Yadav has performed exceptionally well in the Ranji Trophy matches that he has played,” Azharuddin said.
