Former India batter Aakash Chopra feels that KL Rahul should open the innings alongside captain Rohit Sharma in the first Test against Australia, which begins on February 9 at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. He believes the 30-year-old is most suited at the top of the order and should continue to play there.
But, with Shreyas Iyer’s availability dependent on health, Chopra feels Rahul may have to play at number five once again. He added that neither Shubman Gill nor Rohit Sharma would bat at number five, and Rahul may be seen batting at number five because to his versatility.
“There are so many different ways to answer just one question. Rahul (KL) should logically begin with Rohit (Sharma). He is the vice-captain and was the captain in the previous series. It is his ideal situation. “He scores runs just there, hence KL Rahul should open,” Chopra remarked on his YouTube show Aakashvani.
“I feel because KL Rahul is an extremely versatile player, and it happens with him all the time, because others might not be able to do that good of a job there (at number five), Rohit and Shubman Gill will not go down the order, I think KL Rahul will bat at No. 5 and you might see Shubman Gill opening,” the former cricketer added.
