Team India defeated New Zealand in another bilateral series on Wednesday, February 1, thanks to a Shubman Gill masterclass at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After struggling to score runs in the previous two T20Is, the youthful opener was at his merciless best, blasting 126* runs off 63 deliveries. The Kiwi bowlers had no answer for Shubman’s batting, which enabled the Men in Blue to score 234 runs after 20 overs.
Gill hailed Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya after the game for keeping him cool and mentoring him properly during a key portion of his innings. After reflecting on his innings, Gill remarked that it was a near-perfect game for the cricketer.
“To be able to play as I play, I have to be mentally clean. That’s what you (Hardik Pandy) said. Every time I hit a six, he came and advised me – keep your form in the next ball, you don’t have to do anything more, just do what you are doing and don’t try to go too hard. He continued reminding me of each ball, which helped.”
“I was in the zone and hitting in Santner’s last over. So I thought I’d go for him, but you told me to stand back and target other bowlers since he (Santner) has been bowling brilliantly throughout the T20 series. So it was a near-perfect tactical and technical game for me,” Shubman Gill remarked.
