Experienced Indian opener Murali Vijay has announced his retirement from international cricket, effective January 30th, 2023. The cricketer, who has made 61 Test, 17 ODI and 9 T20I appearances for India since his debut in 2008, expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has had in the sport and the support he has received from organizations such as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), Chennai Super Kings and Chemplast Sanmar.
Vijay’s journey in international cricket began impressively, with standout performances in his debut Test match and his second match against Sri Lanka. He solidified his place in the XI with a maiden Test century in 2010 and went on to score overseas centuries in England and Australia. However, his runs dried up in 2018, leading to his eventual dropping from the national side.

While Vijay never quite made it in international white-ball cricket, he experienced a successful stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings, where he scored two centuries and played a key role in the franchise’s 2011 final win. He also had stints with Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab, where he even served as captain.
Despite his international retirement, Vijay stated that he will continue to play cricket and explore new opportunities in the sport, as well as the business side of it. He looks forward to this next chapter in his life and career.
