Since it began on Saturday, January 14, the maiden edition of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 has seen some notable performances. While Bangladesh upset Australia by three wickets in the opener, the tournament for young cricketers has now seen its first-ever hat-trick.
Madison Landsman of South Africa achieved this one-of-a-kind achievement on Monday, January 16, when she scored a well-deserved hat-trick against Scotland at Benoni. The hosts went on to defeat the Scottish squad by 44 runs.
The Scottish bowlers had restricted the Proteas to a below-par total of 112/7 in their first innings, and all they needed to do now was bat effectively to pull off the competition’s second surprise. Madison Landsman, on the other hand, had different ideas, and she carried them out flawlessly when it counted the most.
The 18-year-old leggie weaved a web around the Scottish batsmen in the 15th over, when they had only lost half their side and were poised to take the game away from the South Africans. On the second delivery of that over, Madison accounted for Maryam Faisal. She then dismissed Niamh Muir and Orla Montogomery, thereby ending Scotland’s chances.
The Scottish team had little chance of a comeback after being reduced to 60/8, and their innings were finished in no time for only 68 runs from precisely 17 overs.
Madison Landsman’s amazing over allowed the hosts live to fight another day, as they went on to win their first tournament game. It was a much-needed win for the Proteas after they were defeated by India by seven wickets in their season opener.
Landsman ended her four overs with superb bowling statistics of 4/16. She had also taken Maisie Maceira’s wicket in the conclusion.
