Gambhir’s Critique: Gill’s Century in Final ODI vs Sri Lanka ‘Not Best Test of Ability’

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir praised Shubman Gill after his third international century, but also reminded the Sri Lanka bowlers that he was unbeatable. He claimed that the cricketer would be put to the test against New Zealand and Australia in the forthcoming bilateral series, and his performance will be crucial.

The 23-year-old batted well in the third ODI against Dasun Shanaka’s team. He hit 116 runs off 97 deliveries to start the innings and set the tone for India. Later, Virat Kohli also hit a century as India reached 390 at the conclusion of their 50 overs.

“This probably was not the best test of his ability and on the international stage as well. But you are not going to take it away from him. He has got a second hundred, that’s what you can do. This opponent was for everyone but he has taken that opportunity with both hands.”

“He will have much better opponents when it comes to New Zealand and Australia. Yes, he has started off the year really well and he would want to continue especially against New Zealand and then the four Test matches if he gets that opportunity because Rohit Sharma is coming back, and then the one-dayers against Australia,” Gambhir said.

During a debate about Gill’s brilliant innings, Gambhir said that the batsman should concentrate on what is still to come and take his game to the next level in the next matches.

The veteran cricketer also remarked that the team management should put Gill through his paces against Australia’s fearsome attack in order to prepare him for the ODI World Cup.
