Despite good domestic achievements, young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw has been unable to get into the Indian team. Gautam Gambhir, a former Indian opener, sympathised with the kid and thought that the selectors and head coach should interfere to assist him.
Gautam Gambhir believes that the responsibilities of selectors and coaches extends well beyond just preparing the players for the game. He advised current Indian head coach Rahul Dravid to mentor Prithvi Shaw in these trying times. Dravid has known the young player when he was the coach of the Indian U-19 squad.
“What is the purpose of coaches? What is the purpose of selectors? Not simply to choose the team, or to conduct the throw-downs or get them ready for the game. Finally, it is up to the selectors, coaches, and management to assist these players. We all know how talented someone like Prithvi Shaw is. They should probably get him back on track, which is one of management’s responsibilities “According to Gambhir on Star Sports.
Prithvi Shaw established himself as the next big thing in Indian cricket after a scorching start to his international career. However, a drop in form along with a ban for a drug violation in 2019 cast doubt on his selection to the national squad. He last played for the Indian squad in 2021 and has been on the outside looking in ever since. Gambhir believes that the management should keep young players like Shaw in the mix to ensure that they are on the correct road.
“Someone like Prithvi Shaw, with the sort of start he had to his international career and the kind of skill he has, is someone you back on talent. Yes, you must consider his background – where he comes from and the hardships he has faced. It makes even more sense for management and selectors to keep him in the mix and assist him in getting back on track “Gambhir said.
