BCCI Announces 20-Player Shortlist for 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named a squad of 20 players for the next ODI World Cup, which will be hosted in India later this year. The board’s Annual General Meeting on Sunday decided to finalise a balanced 15-member team for the headline event.

It is also reported that the chosen list of players would be rotated in the bilateral series, with the team taking up one after the other to ensure thorough preparations for the event are underway. BCCI president Roger Binny presided over the meeting through video conference, while captain Rohit Sharma, chief selector Chetan Sharma, coach Rahul Dravid, and NCA head VVS Laxman discussed for hours in a Mumbai hotel before coming up with the final list.

“It was a really productive and informative discussion in which we analysed previous performance and prepared for future events such as the World Cup and World Test Championship (WTC). We will prioritise international cricket while ensuring that the IPL is not diluted “Cricbuzz reported a BCCI insider who attended the meeting as saying.

“The concerns of player availability, workload management, and fitness requirements, as well as the route to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, were also addressed at length during the discussion,” the source said.

Following India’s poor showings in the T20 World Cup 2022 and the Asia Cup 2022, the administration has already began brainstorming ideas for the big event and the World Test Championship (WTC) this year. The BCCI’s senior brass have studied the situation and determined that the ‘Yo-Yo’ and ‘Dexa’ tests would be required as part of the selection process in order to maintain high fitness standards.

“The Yo-Yo Test and Dexa will now be part of the selection criteria and applied in the personalised roadmaps of the central pool of players,” the BCCI said following the meeting in a statement.

The think tank certainly wants to guarantee that the team prepares properly if they are to reclaim their golden days. It is worth noting that Team India is competing for a position in the WTC finals, which will take place after the IPL.
