Shubman Gill remembers MS Dhoni’s motivational remarks following a disappointing debut
Shubman Gill, an emerging batsman, has recounted how veteran captain MS Dhoni’s words of support were a tremendous morale boost for him when he failed on his international debut against New Zealand in January 2019.
Gill expressed concerns about his future after being dismissed for nine runs off 21 balls against the Kiwis in Hamilton, which the Men in Blue went on to lose by eight wickets. That’s when Dhoni reminded Gill that on his international debut against Bangladesh in December 2004, he was run out for a golden duck.
“The day I made my debut, I was dismissed when India was around 15. I was sitting outside and was sad having scored just 9 runs in my debut. So Mahi bhai came and saw that I was very sad. I was then around 18-19 years old. He told me at least your debut was better than mine,” said Gill.
Gill is presently a member of India’s T20I team for the series against New Zealand. The series opener in Wellington was cancelled due to weather, thus the next game will be played on Sunday, November 20 at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
Gill would be looking to make a mark by scoring some crucial runs in this series as the Indian team management begins to train players in the shortest format in preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean and the United States. The Indian squad, led by Hardik Pandya, is playing a second-string lineup while major players rest.
