Ravichandran Ashwin explains why Rahul Dravid is taking a sabbatical from coaching

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri questioned Rahul Dravid and his support staff for having a holiday only a day before India’s first T20I match against New Zealand at the Sky Stadium in Wellington on Thursday, November 18, despite the squad failing to win the T20 World Cup.

In their absence, NCA president VVS Laxman has been tasked with coaching to fill Dravid’s shoes. On the trip, Laxman is aided by NCA trainers like as Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Sairaj Bahutule. Dravid, batting coach Vikram Rathour and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey are expected to rejoin before the squad departs for an ODI and Test series in Bangladesh in December.

In a virtual news conference prior to the First T20I, Shastri revealed that he does not believe in taking breaks and that the coaching staff is always needed to remain with the squad as it helps them see how various players respond in different scenarios. The former World Champion also emphasised that every coach receives at least a 2–3-month rest during the IPL, which he believes is sufficient.

However, India’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin disagrees with Shastri and has indicated why the coaching staff is on vacation. On his YouTube channel, the 36-year-old discussed Rahul Dravid and his teammates’ difficulties during the T20 World Cup, mentioning how it may lead to mental and physical tiredness.

Meanwhile, India’s first Twenty20 International in Wellington was cancelled owing to severe rain. The Men in Blue will now go to Bay Oval on November 20 for their second T20I.
