IPL 2023 – 3 stand-out performers in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, who could bag an IPL contract in the upcoming auctions

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022 began with the group stages on October 11 and has progressed to the knockout phase as of October 30. With the reigning winners, Tamil Nadu, tumbling out of the competition after a dismal first round performance, the T20 tournament is primed to welcome a new SMAT champion.

Many players have lit the stage ablaze with their amazing exploits in the local T20 event. With the IPL mini auction approaching, the franchises will be keeping a close watch on the competition in order to improve their roster for the next season. Some of the SMAT players from the 2022 season might just bag an IPL contract in the mini-auction 2023.

In the Indian domestic circuit, Shivam Chaudhary has been a run-banker. He has appeared in 23 List-A games and scored 928 runs at an average of 46.40. The 25-year-old has been quite productive in the shorter format, scoring 663 runs in 25 matches with a strike rate of 115.90.

The Meerut native impressed in the SMAT 2022 and was one of the Railways’ shining stars in the current season. He batted 123.88 and scored 306 runs in seven games. Shivam kept the innings together while allowing the strikers around him to play freely.

The IPL market has always had a strong demand for quality Indian hitters, and several clubs are expected to go for Shivam in the next auction to boost their Indian batting core. The Railways hitter has shown his talent in the home T20 event and has the potential to make a significant impact in the lucrative T20 league.

In the domestic T20 circuit, Samarth Vyas has been a steady performer. He has appeared in 27 games in the shortest format, scoring 635 runs with a strike rate of 152.27. The star batsman has also shown his batting prowess in the current Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

At No.3, the 26-year-old has taken the attack to the opponents from the start and has helped turn the tide of the game in his side’s favour on several occasions. Samarth has appeared in six games for Saurashtra so far, scoring 300 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 184.04 with 21 gorgeous sixes.

Aside from his striking abilities, the Rajkot native has shown the ability to alter gears when necessary, making him a valuable addition to any squad. Many organisations may be looking to add the Samarth to their armoury for the next season.

Vidhwath Kaverappa has been a wrecking ball for Karnataka in the state T20 event in 2022. The right-arm fast bowler grabbed 18 wickets for his state in eight outings, with an economy rate of 6.36.

Kaverappa was charged with providing Mayank & Co. with an optimum start with the ball, which he accomplished flawlessly. In the game against Jammu and Kashmir, he totally shredded the opposing batting order and assisted his team in defending a par score of 147, with career-best figures of 5-11 in 3.2 overs.

Some franchises need depth in their speed assault and may keep an eye on Kaverappa in the run-up to the mini-auction. The ace bowler is highly dangerous with the new ball and has the potential to become a striking force for their IPL team.
