India vs South Africa 2nd T20I – Virat Kohli gives up a single on 49 and asks Dinesh Karthik to finish
In the second T20I against South Africa, India batted first and scored a record 237/3 in 20 overs. Despite losing the vital toss, Indian hitters went on to post their biggest T20I total against the Proteas, dominating the first innings. India got off to a blazing start thanks to a 96-run partnership for the first wicket in only 9.5 overs from openers Rohit and KL Rahul.
Keshav Maharaj, the in-form spinner, dismissed both openers to pull South Africa back into the game in the middle overs. But then Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli smashed another fast 102-run partnership. Suryakumar hit 61 runs off 22 balls before being caught in the 19th over. However, Kohli hit two consecutive fours to reach 49 at the conclusion of the 19th over.
Kohli just needed one run to complete the over, but he was at the non-striker end. Dinesh Karthik, who was playing as a finisher, missed Kagiso Rabada’s first delivery but hammered four on the second. He missed the following ball, but then smacked a massive six over a deep square leg. Fans yearned for Kohli to return to the strike zone to end the game and complete his fifty.
Karthik also approached Kohli to inquire about playing the following delivery for a single, but the former captain told him to complete the game. Karthik hit another six over deep extra cover but missed a penultimate ball for a bye run.
Kohli missed out on a fifty-by-one run, but India scored 18 runs in the last over to set a massive goal of 237/3. With this 49-run innings, the former skipper became the first Indian player to amass 11,000 runs in T20 cricket.
