SA20 2022 – 3 players who remained unsold at the auction

The first SA T20 league auction got off to a hectic start on Monday, September 19th, when the youthful Tristan Stubbs sparked a bidding battle before being bought by the Sunrisers Eastern Cape for a whopping R 9.2 million (Rs 4.1 crore).

While numerous young players, such as Stubbs and Marco Jansen, went for large sums, there were some notable exclusions, with some of the most well-known stars failing to find a buyer. Let’s take a look at 3 players who remained unsold at the auction.

Number 1. Dean Elgar

Dean Elgar, the South African red-ball captain, could not secure a spot in the squads of the six competing teams after going unsold at the auction. The southpaw is a key character in South African cricket, spearheading the effort with the Test squad to rekindle the flame for the country’s traditional style of cricket. We expected the experienced South African to be one of the big earners at the auction, but it turned out to be quite the opposite, as he went unsold, not just in the main auction, but in the accelerated auction as well. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the player in terms of franchise cricket. With many leagues now opening up around the world, there is no dearth of opportunities, but we are sure that Dean would have loved to play in front of his home crowd.

Number 2. Ross Taylor

A player who recently announced his retirement, Ross Taylor has been honing his skills in franchise cricket off late, and his touch is just as good as it was in the past. However, when his name was called out in the SA20 main auction, there was no interest, and he met the same fate in the accelerated auctions as well. It seems that the franchises are looking to integrate more youth into the system, and maybe they don’t rate Ross Taylor as much to be a part of their system.

Number 3. Carlos Brathwaite

The West Indies all-rounder is highly sought after, all over the world, for his power-hitting capabilities, but that was not enough to attract any sort of interest from the SA20 auction. Now, his chances may look done and dusted, but there is a chance that he might earn a call-up from one of the franchises should they suffer an injury. He is an impact player and we believe that the franchises have missed out on a dynamite here.
