IPL 2023 – Trevor Bayliss has officially replaced Anil Kumble as the head coach of the Punjab Kings

The Punjab Kings have announced the appointment of Trevor Bayliss as head coach, putting an end to long-running rumours. The IPL franchise fired Anil Kumble earlier this month and was looking for a new head coach to replace the former Indian spinner. On Friday, the Punjab-based band made the announcement via its official Twitter account.

The Australian comes in with a massive reputation, having won the 2019 World Cup with England, securing the country’s first 50-over victory. Trevor Bayliss is one of the most successful IPL coaches, having led the Kolkata Knight Riders to their first title in 2012 and their second in 2014. With the Sydney Sixers, he also won a Big Bash League (BBL) title. Bayliss was most recently the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

The Punjab Kings finished sixth in each of the last four seasons and decided to part ways with Kumble after failing to make the playoffs in three consecutive seasons during his tenure. Despite being one of the tournament’s mainstays, the Australian coach faces a difficult task because the Punjab-based franchise has only qualified for the playoffs twice. There have also been rumors of a leadership change in the team after current skipper Mayank Agarwal’s form dipped significantly the previous season.
