CSK stalwarts Stephen Fleming and Faf du Plessis have agreed to coach and lead the Johannesburg Super Kings
According to reports, Chennai Super Kings veterans Stephen Fleming and former batter Faf du Plessis will coach and skipper the Joburg Super Kings in the highly anticipated CSA T20 League, which will take place in January and February of next year.
Faf is one of the franchise’s five direct signings, and he was signed for a fee of $375,000. Moeen Ali, a former CSK colleague and top England all-rounder, has also signed with the Johannesburg Super Kings for $400,000.
Faf du Plessis was a key member of CSK, and he was also a part of three of their IPL titles, in 2011, 2018, and 2021. The former South African captain has played 100 matches with the Chennai-based club in two spells, from 2011 to 2015 and from 2018 to 2021. Faf’s personal best season came in 2021, when he ended as the tournament’s second-highest run-getter, amassing 633 runs from 16 innings at an excellent strike rate of 138.20, including six half-centuries.
Meanwhile, notable acquisitions from Johannesburg include promising Sri Lankan offie Maheesh Theekshana ($200,000), Caribbean all-rounder Romario Shepherd ($175,000), and Proteas speedster Gerald Coetzee ($50,000).
In terms of coaching, Stephen Fleming will be the head coach of the Joburg team, with Eric Simmons aiding him.
Moeen Ali’s availability for the CSA T20 League or another high-profile franchise cricket competition, the UAE’s ILT20, which is likely to overlap with the South African league early next year, is still unknown. Ali has also indicated a desire to play in the International League T20.
Simultaneously, the source says that the team is on the brink of signing former South Africa and CSK all-rounder Albie Morkel, albeit his position is unknown.
