3 Asia Cup Records that could get broken in this year’s tournament

The Asia Cup 2022 will be held in the United Arab Emirates from August 27 to September 11, 2022. (UAE). The competition will include six teams: five full-time clubs and one associate team. India is the incumbent champion, having won the previous two tournaments in 2016 and 2018.

Meanwhile, there are a few records that might be broken during the forthcoming continental championship. While the batting and bowling records are in risk to some degree, the all-rounder record would still stand despite a few players scoring 300+ runs and taking more than 15 wickets in Asia Cups.

Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has a chance to surpass a renowned all-rounder this season, although he is unlikely to lead the Asia Cup rankings right now.

Here are 3 Asia Cup records that could get broken in this year’s tournament.

.

Number 1. Most Wickets in Asia Cup History

Previously, Sri Lankan spin star Muttiah Muralidaran held the record for most Asia Cup wickets with 30 from 24 matches at an economy of 3.75 until being topped by his countryman and elite bowler Lasith Malinga with 33 (29 ODIs + four T20Is).

Even though Malinga still has this renowned record, it might be toppled in the 2019 Gulf tournament, which has two left-arm spinners in contention: Shakib Al Hasan and Ravindra Jadeja.

While Shakib has 24 wickets between the 2010 and 2018 editions, Jadeja has 22 wickets between the 2010 and 2018 editions, and a solid 2022 edition for any or both of them will see these two southpaws dominating the rankings as the highest wicket-takers in Asia Cup history.

.

Number 2. Highest Run Scorer in Asia Cup History

Sanath Jayasuriya is the Asia Cup’s all-time highest run-scorer, with 1220 runs from 25 matches between 1990 and 2008, including three half-centuries and six centuries at a strike rate of 102.52. While the Sri Lankan legend’s record has been unbroken since the 2008 tournament in Pakistan, it may be broken this time.

India’s batting superstars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are among the contenders to shatter this record. While Rohit scored 883 runs in the Asia Cup from 2008 to 2018, Kohli scored 766 runs from 2010 to 2016. For the 2018 edition, he was rested.

As a result, if any or both of them regain their mojo around the 22-yard line and have an exceptional tournament, Sanath Jayasuriya may be dethroned from this top ranking.

Before the Asia Cup 2022, Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Shahid Afridi, and Shakib Al Hasan are the only players in tournament history to have scored over 300 runs and taken 15 wickets. Shakib may beat all of them in terms of wickets, but breaking Sachin and Jayasuriya’s batting records in this event is unachievable.

The renowned Sri Lankan all-rounder and the Master Blaster have scored 1220 and 971 runs, respectively, which Shakib will not be able to match since he is far behind the two. Between 2010 and 2018, the southpaw has just 402 runs, including three half-centuries.

The most Shakib Al Hasan can do is to beat former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, who has 532 runs in this tournament.
