Ishan Kishan rises 68 places to become India’s top-ranked T20I batter
Ishan Kishan has risen to the top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20I rankings to become Team India’s highest-ranked T20I hitter. The left-handed batter vaulted 68 spots to eighth place on the elite list and has received plaudits from all sides. Kishan made his international debut last year and has only played a few matches thus far.
The 23-year-old is the only Indian hitter in the top ten, with KL Rahul dropping to 14th. Regular captain Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer have both fallen a position to 16th and 17th, respectively, while previous captain Virat Kohli has slipped two places to 21st.
Meanwhile, Kishan has been in fine form, scoring 164 runs in three appearances, including two fifties, in the ongoing five-match T20I series against South Africa. Kishan is still in his early T20I career, having played only 13 matches for India and scoring 453 runs at an average of over 38. He’s also hit four fifties and has a strike rate of 132.46.
Senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has risen seven places to 11th in the T20I rankings, while leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has risen four places to 26th. Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood has risen to the top of the T20 bowling rankings, while Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana has risen 16 places to seventh.
In the Test rankings, India’s Jasprit Bumrah has risen to third place, only behind his colleague and veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who remains at the top. Ashwin is also the second-best all-rounder in Test cricket, trailing only his teammate, Ravindra Jadeja.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma and former captain Virat Kohli have kept their seventh and tenth places in the Test batting rankings, respectively. Former England captain Joe Root has reclaimed the top rank after scoring a back-to-back century in a Test series against New Zealand. Root has surpassed Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne to claim the lead.
