Ravi Shastri doesn’t think Umran Malik is ready for a World T20 selection
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that young speedster Umran Malik should not be included in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup later this year, which will be held in October-November. Further clarifying, Shastri stated that it is too early to give Umran a significant break in his career and that the child needs to be developed in order to be in the picture.
The Jammu and Kashmir pacer was rewarded with a national call-up for the present home T20I series against South Africa after impressing everyone with his rapid speed and accuracy with the ball in IPL 2022. He was not, however, named to the starting XI for the opening game in Delhi on Thursday (June 9), in which the Men in Blue were defeated by seven wickets.
Umran Malik, one of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s necessary retainers for IPL 2022, clocked well over 150 kmph at regular intervals and finished with 22 wickets from 14 matches. More crucially, he went on to take three and four wickets, as well as a fifer.
Meanwhile, India suffered a crushing defeat in the first game. Defending a massive total of 211 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the Indian bowlers were successful in dismissing South Africa’s top order but were then taken to task by the sturdy middle-order combo of David Miller (64*) and Rassie van der Dussen (75*).
The defeat broke India’s series of 12 consecutive T20I triumphs, which began in November of last year. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether Umran would be given his first India cap in the second T20I on June 12 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
