Temba Bavuma professes a desire to play in the IPL
Temba Bavuma, the Proteas limited-overs captain, has stated his intention to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at some stage and to head one of the franchises in the cash-rich game. After Quinton de Kock stood down as South Africa’s white-ball captain, Bavuma was selected. He will captain his country in the upcoming five-match T20I tour of India, which begins on June 9.
Bavuma has established himself as a productive batsman across all formats. He made his Test debut against the West Indies and has since gone on to score 2612 runs in 51 Test matches. He has also scored 722 runs in 19 ODIs and 501 runs in 21 T20Is. His continuous performances for the team propelled him to the position of captaincy candidate.
“I would like to play there. The stronger my performances, the more realistic the opportunity becomes. I’ve also developed this fantasy of captaining a team. I don’t know where that comes from. I’d like to get that experience as well. But I kinda need to get into a team before that happens!” Bavuma said.
The Bavuma-led group arrived in Delhi ahead of the opening game, which is set for June 9 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium (Thursday). While India tries to continue its 12-match winning streak and set a new global record, South Africa will prepare to face the No. 1 ranked T20I team and break their streak. The two teams previously played in a three-match Test series and three-match ODI series, both of which South Africa won 2-1 and 3-0.
Many South African and Indian squad members were seen in the recently concluded IPL 2022. The Proteas players were really impressive during their season. Among those who participated in the IPL and will be seen in the forthcoming series are Kagiso Rabada, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Anrich Nortje, and Marco Jansen. Bavuma also gave his thoughts on these players’ tournament performances.
