Piyush Chawla believes Rishabh Pant will captain the Delhi Capitals in 2023
Rishabh Pant, the captain of the Delhi Capitals, has found a backup in India’s leg-spinner Piyush Chawla. Pant has faced criticism following his poor season in IPL 2022, with questions raised about his leadership abilities.
The flashy batter’s dubious actions during the season were amplified to epic proportions when he failed to walk upstairs after Mumbai’s Tim David was called not out by the on-field umpire in a must-win game versus the Indians. Later, replays revealed a minor scratch and had Rishabh reviewed it, his team would have almost certainly made the playoffs, as David went on to smash a match-defining 34 off 11 balls.
“Pant is young and is still learning as a captain. Mistakes happen. Not only Rishabh Pant, but any captain can make mistakes. He is one for the future, and I am sure he will learn with time and experience. He is a street-smart cricketer who will only improve as he keeps leading,” Chawla said.
Despite scoring 340 runs at a strike rate of little over 150 in IPL 2022, the Delhi skipper failed to register a single half-century this season, a first in his seven-year IPL career. Pant was chastised for his short spells at the crease, but Chawla voiced his wish to see him head the Delhi team next season, believing that the captaincy had no effect on Pant’s batting.
