IPL 2022 – 5 of the oldest players of this season of the IPL who made an Impact
It is generally claimed that T20 cricket is a game for young people; fitness and agility are two important criteria in succeeding in this format. These elements become much more important when the tournament is the Indian Premier League (IPL), where the stakes are at their highest. As a result, every year, the IPL produces a plethora of fresh stars, both Indian and foreign.
However, numerous ‘old’ players have left their imprint with some outstanding performances in each season of this competition. This year is no exception, as several players have once again demonstrated that age is just a number.
Let’s take a look at 5 older players of this season who made an impact.
Number 1. David Warner (35 years old)
Throughout the IPL seasons, the experienced Australian cricketer has been one of the most consistent performances. The powerful batter had previously played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Delhi Daredevils (now the Delhi Capitals, Warner’s current side).
David Warner scored 500 or more runs every six seasons from 2014 to 2020, with an average of around 40. Warner’s most forgettable season in the IPL was in 2021 when he only managed 195 runs in 8 matches at an average of 24.37.
However, David Warner had a successful comeback season in the IPL 2022, scoring 432 runs in 12 matches with an excellent average of 48 and strike rate of 150.52. Aside from being one of the most explosive batters of all time, Warner is also one of the quickest and most devoted fielders, adding further feathers to his cap as an ‘old’ player.
Number 2. Faf du Plessis (37 years old)
Faf du Plessis is a legendary character in modern-day cricket. The South African batsman was signed by RCB and was also named captain for this season after Virat Kohli decided to stand down from the position last season.
Until 2021, du Plessis was an important member of the Chennai Super Kings (he previously played for the Rising Pune Supergiants for one season) roster, serving as the team’s top order’s backbone. His steadiness as a hitter helped CSK win a number of difficult matches. His electrifying fielding abilities are unrivaled.
With 443 runs in 14 matches, du Plessis is seventh on the list of the leading run-scorers this season. He has also been quite calculated in his on-field decisions.
Number 3. Dinesh Karthik (36 years old)
Karthik, also known as DK, has been a standout performance for RCB this season. Karthik has proven that he has what it takes to be a finisher by scoring quickfire runs in practically every game.
The Kolkata Knight Riders released Karthik prior to the IPL 2022 auctions. RCB was quick enough to purchase him during the mega auctions for INR 5.5 crore.
This seasoned wicketkeeper hitter has had a spectacular season in IPL 2022, scoring 287 runs in 14 matches with an excellent average of 57.40 and an astounding strike rate of 191.33.’
Number 4. Umesh Yadav (34 years old)
Umesh Yadav is affectionately known as the “Strongman,” and with good reason. The well-built pacer from Nagpur has been one of India’s most outstanding speedsters.
Yadav has played for several IPL teams, including RCB and DC. During the IPL 2022 mega auctions, he was purchased for INR 2 crore by the Kolkata Knight Riders.
He has been outstanding this season, particularly on the powerplay. With 16 wickets from 12 matches this season, he is the second-highest wicket-taker for KKR. His 7.06 economy rate is one of the finest this season.
Number 5. Ravichandran Ashwin (35 years old)
Ravi Ashwin, the senior bowling all-rounder, is one of the most experienced players in the IPL. He is a vital asset to his squad, known for his spin bowling variations and helpful knocks deeper down the order.
Ashwin was a member of the CSK team from 2008 to 2015, as well as the Rising Pune Supergiants in 2016-17, Kings XI Punjab in 2018-19, and Delhi Capitals in 2020. He was purchased by the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2022 super auctions for INR 5 crore.
This season, Ravi Ashwin has contributed with the bat for RR. So far, he has scored 185 runs, including one half-century, and taken 11 wickets at an economy rate of 7.33.
