IPL 2022 – Shreyas Iyer’s clarification regarding KKR CEO, according to Aakash Chopra
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer was instructed to amend his statement about CEO Venky Mysore’s role in team selection. Iyer had addressed the problems during team selection in a post-game game and mentioned the head coach and CEO’s involvement as a key aspect to consider, which sparked a lot of backlash on social media.
Iyer emphasized in the KKR’s next game’s post-match conference that he wanted to demonstrate how the CEO has been helping the players on the bench and did not mean it in a negative sense. It obviously did not go well with the supporters, as there was another incident in which Iyer was enraged at head coach McCullum’s decision to reserve Pat Cummins for the fast bowlers.
Chopra believes that Iyer would have met with team management to clarify the air about the CEO’s role in squad selection. When Iyer was dissatisfied with the coach’s preparations against the Rajasthan Royals, he cited the McCullum incident. Meanwhile, KKR started the season strongly with three wins in four games but faltered in the middle due to numerous changes in the team lineup.
“Shreyas Iyer once said in a press conference that the KKR CEO is also involved in team selection. I think he got a rap on his knuckles and maybe he was told to change his statement. He then clarified that he had meant that the CEO motivates players when they get dropped and consoles them, but he isn’t involved in the team selection,” Chopra told on his Youtube Channel.
KKR will not have McCullum as head coach for the upcoming season, and they are expected to overhaul the team set up as well, with the current group unable to regularly put up solid performances.
