IPL 2022 – Kane Williamson’s strategy perplexed Aakash Chopra
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s campaign in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 has been nothing short of thrilling. After losing their first two games, the Orange Army staged an incredible comeback, winning five consecutive games. However, the tables were turned once more when SRH lost their next five games, effectively ending their prospects of making the playoffs. The main cause for SRH’s demise has been skipper Kane Williamson’s troubles with the bat.
This season, the right-handed starter has only scored 208 runs, with an average and strike rate of less than 20 and 100, respectively. These figures are far from remarkable, and the impact is palpable. Meanwhile, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra believes Williamson’s captaincy has been subpar.
During the match against KKR, Williamson ordered off-spinner Washington Sundar to bowl the final over, and Andre Russell took him to the cleaners. Notably, when these two sides faced earlier this season, left-arm spinner Jagadeesha Suchith bowled the final over, and Russell did the damage then as well. Chopra, perplexed by the strange method, questioned Williamson’s think tank and plan.
“Kane the captain, I think, that’s the scrutiny as well. Twice now, against the same unit. Jagadeesha Suchith bowled the last over at the Brabourne Stadium and here it’s Washington Sundar. I mean, how?” an exasperated Aakash Chopra said on Star Sports after the match.
Meanwhile, SRH is in trouble because winning their next two games may not be enough to qualify for the playoffs. They will also have to rely on other match results to advance to the next round.
