IPL 2022 – 3 worthy candidates to replace Brendon McCullum as the KKR head coach

Brendon McCullum, a former New Zealand cricketer, has been named head coach of England’s men’s Test team. The ECB has finally made the 40-year-appointment old’s official. However, McCullum’s departure means enormous shoes to fill for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

McCullum, in particular as a bigwig character in the franchise, has helped KKR embrace the exhilarating brand of cricket. Last year, his strong partnership with former skipper Eoin Morgan helped Kolkata finish second. More crucially, the T20 legend’s new duty will prevent him from guiding the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League.

With Brendon set to relinquish his post at the end of the ongoing season, the onus is now on the KKR board to go through the possible candidates and keep a replacement ready to take over as the head coach from 2023. In this article, we are going to talk about 3 worthy candidates to replace Brendon McCullum as the KKR Head Coach.

Number 1. Justin Langer

Even Justin Langer could be an intriguing candidate to be KKR’s next head coach. In terms of stature, the Australian icon can be a suitable alternative for Brendon McCullum. More crucially, with Langer looking to teach for an extended period of time, he can make Kolkata his new home in a big way.

So far, the southpaw has not joined any team since stepping down as Australia’s head coach. The 51-year-old has also left a lasting mark with Perth Scorchers as a T20 head coach. Langer has won three BBL championships with the orange army. In addition, the Australian legend led his team to victory in the first-ever T20 World Cup.

Overall, Langer may find a decent breather in the IPL after coaching full-time in international cricket, and he may be able to push KKR to greater heights in the coming years.

Number 2. Jacques Kallis

Jacques Kallis, a former Knight Riders player, and coach, is eligible to return to the KKR setup. The South African icon played with Kolkata till 2014, when he was hired as a batting mentor. In reality, following Trevor Bayliss’ departure in 2015, Kallis was promoted as head coach. The team had made the playoffs three times under his leadership.

However, after Kallis’ departure, KKR has only made it to the knockout stages once. Unless they make a comeback in IPL 2021, the purple army has looked entirely inferior and erratic. Currently, Protea, 46, appears to be available to join the team.

Overall, while temporarily coaching England last year, Kallis stressed the need of being open to any coaching changes. Hopefully, his return to the franchise would boost the team’s overall fortunes.

Number 3. David Hussey

Even David Hussey, as an in-house candidate, can help train the KKR team. His involvement with the franchise is also nearly three years old. David and Brendon McCullum have collectively overseen the squad by signing as mentors in IPL 2020.

So far in other T20 leagues, the 44-year-old has served as the head coach of the Melbourne Stars in the BBL. David had taken over for Stephen Fleming in the 2021-22 season. However, the Stars finished the season in sixth place in the points table.

Nonetheless, promoting David Hussey involves making only minor changes to Kolkata’s support personnel. The Australian cricketer can stick with the same team culture and even the same brand of cricket. Unsurprisingly, the players may support him as the new head coach.
