Rohit Sharma believes Tilak Varma has the potential to become a ‘all-format’ player for India
Nothing has gone right for the Mumbai Indians in the present Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, as the five-time champions were the first to be officially eliminated from the playoff competition. The Rohit Sharma-led squad still has some league-stage games left in the competition, and all they have to play for is dignity. Meanwhile, MI defeated Chennai Super Kings by five wickets on Thursday (May 12) to earn a consolation win.
Tilak Varma, who played another outstanding knock, was one of the main architects of MI’s victory. Although MI just needed to chase 98 to win, they lost four wickets in 33 runs and appeared to be in trouble. Tilak, who has been outstanding all season, had amazing character and played a precise knock. He hit an undefeated 34 from 32 balls to help MI cruise to victory.
Tilak is only 19 years old and made his IPL debut this season, thus many people expect him to go far. MI captain Rohit Sharma falls into the same group. The 35-year-old also feels the southpaw would eventually become an all-format player for India.
Tilak has scored 368 runs in 12 matches so far, with an average and strike rate of above 40 and 130, respectively. Tilak has been a sensation in his first IPL season, and it will be interesting to watch what the future holds for him. Meanwhile, MI has two more games left in the season and may want to put some of their other benched players to the test.
