Brendon McCullum will step down as KKR’s head coach after the IPL 2022 season to become England’s head coach

Brendon McCullum, the head coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders, will depart the club after taking over as head coach of the England Test team. McCullum is apparently the favorite to succeed Chris Silverwood as England Test team coach, and it will be his first assignment as a full-time head coach for a country. McCullum has coached the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League, as well as led the KKR to the finals last year.

It should be remembered that McCullum was one of the most aggressive batsmen during his playing career, and he still retains the record for the fastest Test century off 54 balls against Australia in the 2015/16 season. He owns the highest score of 302 in the lengthier format, and his approach to the game has carried over into his teaching style.

After an 0-4 loss in the Ashes last year, England fired Silverwood as head coach, and Paul Collingwood was named interim head coach for the forthcoming Test series against the West Indies. However, England was defeated 0-1 in the West Indies, and the search for a full-time head coach continued. While numerous candidates have been floated in recent weeks, it has ultimately come down to McCullum, and an official announcement is likely soon.

According to a KKR insider, McCullum disclosed in a meeting a few days ago that he plans to leave the team after the current season to become England’s head coach. Interestingly, England will host New Zealand in a three-match Test series in June, and McCullum will have to begin his assignment against his native country.
