India World T20 – 3 Opening Batsmen who are in contention for a national call-up
With more talent rising from the domestic circuit and the IPL, the current Indian cricket team appears to be stronger than ever. This is a positive omen for the future of Indian cricket since the BCCI may implement a rotation policy by resting their key players and giving up-and-coming stars valuable opportunities during the bilateral series.
The T20 World Cup 2022 is also approaching, and the board faces a difficult task in selecting the best squad. The previous year’s T20 World Cup did not go India’s way, and the selectors will keep a close eye on each player’s performance in order to select the appropriate mix that can bring balance to the team.
In this article, we are going to talk about 3 opening batsmen who are in contention for a national call-up.
Number 1. Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill was KKR’s most dependable opening batter until last year when his poor performance led to his release. Gujarat Titans, a newly founded side, selected him in the 2022 auctions, and Gill is making the most of the opportunity by performing well in key crucial matches.
He has four half-centuries this season and has been one of their important performers, with Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, and Mohammed Shami, who have all helped Gujarat reach the top of the points table.
Gill’s hard-hitting and free-flowing stroke playstyle would fit the Australian conditions where the T20 World Cup is set to begin in October. He has also had the experience of playing with the test team in Australia in 2020 and would like to get back into the white ball setup by remaining consistent in the remaining IPL games.
Number 2. Prithvi Shaw
The Delhi Capitals’ dashing right-handed opener from Mumbai is having a fantastic season. Prithvi Shaw has routinely provided Delhi with solid powerplay starts throughout the years, which other teams lack.
His strong performance in the Ranji Trophy helped him get selection for India against the West Indies in 2018, where he hit a century on his debut. Just when many people thought Shaw was the best guy to lead Team India, he suffered an unforeseen injury that forced him to miss most of the local matches while also being dropped from India’s roster.
Shaw has been banging on the doors of selectors with his match-winning performances since returning from injury. Ideally, the T20 World Cup should provide Prithvi Shaw with an opportunity to play his natural game, comparable to that of Virender Sehwag. In T20 cricket, getting runs from the opening delivery is critical, and Shaw is capable of doing just that in the 20-over extravaganza.
Number 3. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan, widely regarded as one of the best white-ball openers of all time, was eventually pulled from the T20 set up just before the 2021 T20 world cup. Many were surprised because Dhawan has been performing admirably in the Indian Premier League and for Team India.
However, for whatever reason, the BCCI chose Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Virat Kohli as their top-order batters while keeping Shikhar out of the squad. However, this did not benefit India, as they lost both of their first two matches and were ousted from the competition at the group stage.
But things have remained the same for Shikhar Dhawan, who is once again showcasing how good of a player he is by performing well for his new team Punjab Kings. He is also one of the few players who have scored over 400 runs in each of the last six IPL seasons. Hopefully, his hard work and devotion will get him back into the Indian squad for this year’s T20 World Cup, which would be advantageous because Dhawan’s expertise might help India win the title for the second time.
