IPL 2022 – Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders Match 47 – Post Match Comments

After losing five straight matches, the Kolkata Knight Riders won by seven wickets over the Rajasthan Royals in Match 47 of the IPL 2022 on May 2 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Meanwhile, the Royals have now lost two games in a row in three days.

Shreyas Iyer, the KKR captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first. They parted ways with opener Devdutt Padikkal early on. Jos Buttler made his presence known with a couple of magnificent strokes, but his stay at the crease was cut short in the ninth over for only 22 runs. While other batters struggled, skipper Sanju Samson single-handedly took care of the RR innings, scoring 54 runs off 49 deliveries to drive Rajasthan to 152/5.

In response, Kolkata lost its opener, Aaron Finch, quickly, and Baba Indrajith too did not stay long. Captain Shreyas Iyer then grabbed command of the game, scoring 34 runs off 32 balls. Following his removal, the middle-order combo of Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh ensured that there were no additional snags and helped KKR cross the finish line in the final over. Rinku Singh was not out on a 23-ball 42, while Nitish remained unbeaten on 48 runs from 37 deliveries.

The end result of the contest was a win for the Kolkata Knight Riders and this is what the captains and the player of the match had to say.

Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals) – Losing Captain

The wicket was a bit slow, but they also bowled really well but with the kind of batting we had, would have liked a few more boundaries at the end and finish off a bit better. I think we were short by 15-20 runs. Having a few niggles from the last couple of games, It’s feeling good now and I’m recovering well. It’s a great effort (with the ball), we showed some real fight in the game and the energy was really amazing. Personally, we should have batted a bit better. Of course, win the next toss for sure. We have to keep on assessing the game and who is batting with us, wickets at the wrong time stopped me to keep on going with the momentum. Wanted to build up the partnership and when I wanted to go hard I think they bowled really well and we couldn’t execute our shots.

Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders) – Winning Captain

Right from the powerplay when our bowlers conceded just 36 runs and took a wicket, it was just the start we needed. We have been talking about Umesh right from the start. He has increased his pace and bowls those hard lengths, and as a captain, you just have to give him the ball to deliver. Whenever I give Sunil Narine the ball, he gets me wickets, but the batsmen don’t take chances against him. He is very economical, but when he gets a wicket, he gets a big one. The way Rinku is maintaining his calm, playing only his second or third game, is outstanding. He is a great asset for the franchise in the future. The way he gets his start, he doesn’t look like a newcomer. We are looking for a good start. I love pressure, but it sweats a lot of me to build the innings in every game. Before the start of the game, I told Mavi, Rinku, and Anukul to take the tough positions on the field. Mavi’s catch of Buttler was superb.

Rinku Singh (Kolkata Knight Riders) – Player of the match

A lot of players have played Ranji from Aligarh, but I am the first to play the IPL. This is a big league and there is a lot of pressure obviously. I have been waiting for the last five years to get a chance. I worked very hard, came back from injury and did well in the domestic circuit as well. When I was batting, Bhaiyya (Rana) and Baz (McCullum) told me to stay till the end and finish it.
