IPL 2022 – Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians Match 44 – Post Match Comments

On April 30, the Mumbai Indians defeated the in-form Rajasthan Royals by five wickets at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai in IPL 2022 Match 44. After eight straight losses, the five-time winners finally managed to add two points to their score with this victory.

The coin landed in the favour of MI captain Rohit Sharma, who chose to bowl. The strategy was dead on, as the Mumbai bowlers kept piling on the pressure on the legendary RR batting line-up, which couldn’t give much resistance. Jos Buttler’s one-man show contributed to their respectable score of 158/6. He scored 67 runs on 52 pitches.

In response, Mumbai lost skipper Rohit early and Ishan Kishan could not stay long. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma came to the rescue with an 81-run third-wicket stand. While Yadav scored 51 runs off 39 deliveries, Varma chipped in with a 30-ball 35 before both were bowled out in rapid succession.

Nonetheless, Tim David, who was playing in his third game for MI, kept his cool and helped the five-time champions cross the finish line with four balls to spare. On a nine-ball 20, he remained unbeaten.

The Mumbai Indians finally registered a win in this season of the IPL and this is what the captains and player of the match had to say.

Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals) – Losing Captain

We could have scored a few more runs. Dew came in and it was tough to bowl as the ball was getting wet. We changed the ball as it was getting really wet. Different venues are playing in different ways. Batting first here was tough as it was two-paced. Few more runs with the bat would have helped.

Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians) – Winning Captain

I’d definitely take it (win), that’s how we play, real potential came out today, with the ball especially. They kept applying the pressure. If you keep taking wickets, it’s going to be difficult for them, we did that perfectly today. This is the team we played in the first couple of games except few bowling changes. When you have a season like that, you are not sure of your combination. You want to try out so many things. The conditions are different. The ball tends to grip here, the pitches are flat in the other venues. We try and field the best combination, it hasn’t worked for eight games. But one thing I can say is, we were not blown away by the opposition, we came really close. Had we won those games, things would have been slightly different. (On Hrithik and Kartikeya) Both of these guys are courageous, they want to do something special. It gives me the confidence to bowl them at any given stage. We played very well, bowlers came together, and batters did the job as well.

Suryakumar Yadav (Mumbai Indians) – Player of the Match

It was really important for me to play till the end, but my job at No. 3 was to take the game ahead from where Rohit left. Nevertheless, very happy with the way things went. It was an important win to have a good atmosphere. Really looking forward to the few games ahead. I have enjoyed batting at all positions, but I love batting at No. 3 because I can pace my innings accordingly and take the game ahead. I am really flexible. (This win) Spreads loads of positivity, even in the practice session, we are enjoying each others’ company.
