IPL 2022 – 3 Players who can replace Tim David in the Mumbai Indians squad

The Mumbai Indians are in disarray halfway through the IPL 2022 season. Nothing seems to be working for the five-time champs right now, despite team changes and batting order alterations. The Mumbai Indians are the only team yet to win a game in the competition, having lost all eight games. Even if they win all of their remaining games, they will be eliminated from contention for the playoffs.

The cause for MI’s poor performance this season has been a lack of a comprehensive team effort in every game. Much of it may be attributed to their poor performance in the Mega Auction, as they let go of a few of the players who could have contributed more value to the side. One could argue that the franchise overpaid for certain players who had little IPL experience, to begin with. This is obviously surprising, given that MI has been one of the more successful teams in terms of executing their auction plan.

Tim David was a major deal for the five-time champions, who paid a hefty Rs 8.25 crore for him. The Singaporean hitter has a reputation for being a powerful striker in T20 cricket, but he has struggled to find his groove in the IPL this season. Tim David was demoted to the bench after only a few games. It was also a risk to sign the batsman for such a premium sum, given his lack of IPL experience. Instead, there were several other prospects available in the Mega Auction who would have been ideal for the side, and in this article, we look at 3 players who would have been excellent alternatives to Tim David.

Number 1. Liam Livingstone

Liam Livingstone has been one of Punjab Kings’ top batters this season. The Kings’ batting lineup, led by Mayank Agarwal, has not lived up to expectations, but the Englishman has certainly stood out with a couple of outstanding performances. So far, he has 245 runs scored at an average of 30.62 in eight innings pitched.

Because the Punjab Kings have three openers in their starting lineup, Liam Livingstone has had to be creative with his batting position. Depending on the situation, he may play at number four or even number five. Again, the Mumbai Indians could have bid for the English batter, who was taken up by the Kings for a princely sum of Rs 11.50 crore. Given that he is more than simply a handy bowler, he could have been the ideal candidate to replace Tim David and could have offered even more value to the team.

Number 2. Shimron Hetmyer

Shimron Hetymer has been attracting attention this IPL season. The West Indian hitter has been instrumental in the Rajasthan Royals’ success in the first half of the season, which has them just a few victories away from a playoff berth. Rajasthan went all-in on the left-handed batsman, spending up to Rs 8.50 crores to get his services. However, it has proven to be one of the best auction purchases thus far.

Given Shimron Hetymer’s performance, one could argue that the Mumbai Indians should have pursued the southpaw at the Mega Auction. MI paid more than Rs. 8 crores for Tim David. They could have gotten Shimron Hetymer’s services for a little extra money.

The 25-year-old had failed to show his batting talent in the previous three seasons, but he has come on the big stage in IPL 2022. In just 8 innings this season, he has scored 227 runs at a strike rate of more than 170 and an average of 56.75. The Mumbai Indians will almost definitely rethink their auction strategy for the coming season.

Number 3. Jason Holder

The Mumbai Indians are in desperate need of a great all-rounder who can bowl four overs and bat effectively as well. This has impacted the side’s balance since they have had to field five specialist bowlers to replace this deficiency. Jason Holder was a player who had the potential to fix many problems for the Mumbai Indians.

Given his talent, the former West Indian red-ball captain was acquired at a low cost by Lucknow Super Giants at the auction. LSG paid only Rs. 50 lakhs more for the all-rounder than MI did for Tim David. Holder, while unable to replace Tim David’s hitting skills, might have been a regular starter in the side and could have partnered Jasprit Bumrah in the death overs. Jason Holder is another really intelligent batsman who has proved his batting prowess in the IPL over the last several seasons.
