MI has signed Madhya Pradesh spinner Kumar Kartikeya as a replacement for Arshad Khan, who is injured
Arshad Khan, the Mumbai Indians’ left-arm medium bowler, has been ruled out of the IPL 2022 season due to an injury. Kumar Kartikeya, a left-arm spinner from Madhya Pradesh, has been called up to replace him. Arshad has yet to make his IPL debut, and the 24-year-old has only played three List A games in his domestic career. He was acquired by the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2022 mega auction for a base price of INR 20 Lakh.
However, his departure from the tournament will herald the arrival of exciting young talent Kartikeya, who will join the Mumbai Indians for the remainder of the IPL 2022 season. Kartikeya will join the side for the same fee that Arshad was offered, and it will be interesting to see if Kartikeya, unlike Arshad, gets a chance in Mumbai Indians’ colors.
Kartikeya has played nine first-class games and 19 List A matches in his domestic career, taking 35 and 18 wickets respectively. He had a strong performance in the 2021-22 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, taking five wickets in five games at an impressive economy rate of 5.05. However, with Hrithik Shokeen performing well, it will be difficult for the 24-year-old Kartikeya to directly make the playing XI.
With eight losses in eight games, the Mumbai Indians have dropped out of contention for a playoff spot, and the five-time champions have yet to win this season. The Rohit Sharma-led side has struggled with their overseas contingent, and their auction strategy of going for Jofra Archer despite his unavailability has also been called into question.
However, the franchise has talented youngsters like Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma who have already played some mind-blowing knocks. On Saturday, the Mumbai Indians will face the Rajasthan Royals at the DY Patil Stadium.
