IPL 2022 – Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings Match 38 – Preview

With three victories in seven games and a position in the unfavourable half of the points standings, the Punjab Kings are rushing toward the awkwardly familiar territory of needing to approach every remaining game as a must-win in order to guarantee their first postseason berth in eight seasons. Chennai Super Kings, their opponents on Monday (April 25), are almost there, with the defending champions’ qualifying chances hanging by the barest of threads after only two wins in seven. Both parties seek a lifeline from the other’s agony in order to keep their weak IPL 2022 campaign alive.

The match is scheduled to take place on the 25th of April, 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings Match 38 – Pitch Report and past head to head

The Wankhede pitches are once again capable of delivering massive totals, and chasing has been the preferred strategy at the venue. However, the last two games have been won by teams that successfully defended their big lead – the Delhi Capitals on both instances.

Chennai leads the overall standings, however in the 14 games since Punjab last qualified for the top four (in 2014), the two clubs have met 14 times and shared the spoils evenly. Earlier this season at Brabourne Stadium, PBKS comfortably defeated CSK on 126 in a chase of 181.

Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings Match 38 – Tactics and Lineups

Punjab Kings

CSK’s opening combination has yet to surpass 28, while the best score by a no. 3 batter this season is 35 by Mooen Ali, and Punjab would like to keep it that way. To that end, they may pit Arshdeep against (a struggling) Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has already been dismissed twice by the pacer during their respective IPL careers.

Predicted Lineup  –  Mayank Agarwal (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow/Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shahrukh Khan, Odean Smith, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh, Vaibhav Arora

Chennai Super Kings

Punjab’s spinners together have the lowest economic rate in IPL 2022, at 8.65, a weakness that CSK would be well aware of and exploit. This could tempt CSK to recall Mooen for the game, or possibly Jadeja to move up the order in order to get some much-needed runs. Dhoni holds the key following the powerplay against a squad against which he has five fifties and 630 runs at an average of 52.5.

Predicted Lineup –  Ruturaj Gaikwad, Robin Uthappa, Mitchell Santner/Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja (C), MS Dhoni (wk), Dwaine Pretorius, Dwayne Bravo, Maheesh Theekshana, Mukesh Choudhary
