IPL 2022 – 3 Blunders made by the Chennai Super Kings for this season

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the four-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winners, have not appeared confident this season with their performances and attitude on the field. They have failed to win a single match in their four previous appearances in the event. On April 9, the Super Kings fell to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), unable to defend their 154-run total.

Apart from a mediocre and inconsistent batting performance, CSK have lacked the ability to take up wickets with the new ball or in the middle overs. Stephen Fleming, the team’s head coach, has revealed that their four-game losing streak – their worst in IPL history – has enabled uneasiness and nerves to sneak into the group.

In the previous game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the CSK side finally got its first win of the season after Robin Uthappa and Shivam Dube’s heroics led them to a near unassailable total. However, this win does not discount the fact that their season would have been going a whole lot better had they not made a few obvious blunders prior to the start of the season. In this article, we are going to talk about 3 blunders that the Chennai Super Kings made for this season.

Number 1. Switching captaincy post the mega auction

One of the most controversial moments for the CSK came when MS Dhoni stepped down from captaincy post the mega auction and handed over the reins to Ravindra Jadeja. Now, Jadeja is one of the best all-rounders in T20 cricket, but great skill doesn’t always translate into great leadership and the CK camp is learning it the hard way. The new skipper is now managing a team that was built keeping in mind MS Dhoni as the leader and sometimes, the same system does not work for a new captain.

The crunch moments of the game is where people have started spotting Jadeja’s absolute lacklustre captaincy and he has even started putting himself to field near the boundary, away from the heart of the action while Dhoni is still seen calling the shots from behind the stumps. If this was the case, CSK should have stuck with Dhoni as the skipper and put in Jadeja or someone else as the vice captain in order to get a season long mentoring session from one of the best skippers the game has ever seen.

Number 2. Failure to sign a replacement for Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar, a vital element of the CSK system, suffered a quadriceps injury in February during the third T20I against the West Indies. Although he was expected to rejoin the squad in the final week of April following his recovery, he allegedly sustained a back ailment at the NCA and will miss the most of current season.

Chahar’s absence has made a significant hole in CSK’s playing XI, despite the fact that he has been a steady contributor for them. Deepak produced his finest performance to date in the IPL 2019, grabbing 22 wickets in 17 matches. His bowling brilliance was demonstrated again the following season, when he claimed 12 wickets in 14 matches. He took 14 wickets in 15 games in the 2021 edition and was a major cause for CSK to win the title as well. He won a lucrative deal of INR 14 crores from the franchise this year as a result of his performances.

In the loss of Chahar, Chennai’s bowling appears to be a little underwhelming, owing to a dearth of excellent Indian bowlers. Tushar Deshpande and Mukesh Choudhary, two youngsters, have been unable to make an impression thus far in the competition. They have failed to take wickets in the powerplay, a quality that Deepak Chahar has.

Number 3. Releasing Faf du Plessis

Faf du Plessis, the franchise’s most consistent run scorer over the last decade, was not retained ahead of the 2022 super auction. The former Proteas captain was in fine form last season, amassing 633 runs. He was instrumental in Chennai capturing their fourth coveted title. In the title showdown against Kolkata Knight Riders, the right-handed hitter struck a match-winning 86 runs off 59 balls.

Du Plessis has been a stalwart for CSK throughout the years. Faf scored 162 runs at an average of 32.40 in his six IPL 2018 matches. He backed it up with 396 runs in 12 IPL 2019 matches, assisting the squad in reaching the finals. Although CSK did not qualify for the playoffs in the next edition, Faf du Plessis again emerged as the team’s leading run scorer with 449 runs.

Chennai blew it by failing to retain him before to the sale. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) acquired him in the 2022 edition’s auction and selected him as the side’s captain. Faf du Plessis has already made an impact, scoring 138 runs in four innings. However, CSK has been unable to find a suitable substitute for the Proteas cricketer, who has plagued them thus far in the tournament’s 15th edition.
