CSK’s inaugural victory this season comes as a result of a record-breaking performance by Shivam Dube and Robin Uthappa

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have finally made their IPL 2022 debut, defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 23 runs in Match 22 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Shivam Dube and Robin Uthappa’s blistering and devastating half-centuries, along with spinner Maheesh Theekshanna’s four-wicket haul, ensured the Men in Yellow maintained their dominance against the Bangalore-based franchise.

Faf du Plessis won the toss and opted to field first in the southern derby. RCB made two changes, replacing David Willey and Harshal Patel with Josh Hazlewood and Suyash Prabhudessai, respectively. CSK retained their starting XI from the previous encounter as they sought their first victory. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s miserable performance continued as he amassed just 17 runs.

The former made 95* off 46 deliveries, including five fours and eight sixes, while Uthappa made 88 off 50 deliveries, with four fours and nine maximums.

The pair stitched the second-best partnership for any wicket for CSK, 165 runs, and also the greatest third-wicket stand in IPL history, as CSK stormed to a huge 216/4 in 20 overs. Akash Deep was Du Plessis’ most costly bowler, conceding 58 runs in his four-over performance. Additionally, the four-time champs amassed their biggest total ever against RCB. Chasing a gigantic 217-run goal, RCB got off to the worst possible start, losing skipper Du Plessis for only eight and one runs, respectively.

Glenn Maxwell made 26 runs, while Shahbaz Ahmed made 41. Prabhudesai, making his debut, was outstanding with his 18-ball 34-run knock. Dinesh Karthik fought back, scoring 34 runs off only 14 balls, including two fours and three sixes. Theekshana excelled with the ball, taking four wickets for 33 runs in four overs. CSK completed the task in the end to get two points and open their season account. Shivam Dube, CSK’s leading run scorer this season, was named Player of the Match for his spectacular knock.
