Andrew McDonald has been hired as the full-time head coach of Australia

Andrew McDonald has been named full-time head coach of Australia in all three forms. Due to the former all-four-year rounder’s contract, he will remain in command until 2026. McDonald joined the national team in late 2019 as a senior assistant and bowling tutor. He even stepped in as acting coach for the Pakistan tour following Justin Langer’s departure earlier this year.

The Australians upset Pakistan with a 1-0 victory in the three-match Test series. While the Men in Yellow dropped the opening two ODI legs, they recovered to win the one-off T20I. McDonald’s hiring is said to have been influenced significantly by the national team’s performance on Pakistani soil. Notably, McDonald coached the national team on multiple occasions throughout Langer’s reign to give him a break.

This includes an ODI series in India in 2020, a five-match T20I trip of New Zealand in 2021, and a five-match home T20I series earlier this year against Sri Lanka.

McDonald has extensive coaching experience, having coached Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades to many Australian domestic titles and a Big Bash League (BBL) championship, respectively.

He even served as head coach of IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals. As a result, he would be keen to elevate the Australian side throughout his term.
