IPL 2022 – 3 players who Mumbai Indians should have retained for this season

The Mumbai Indians (MI) have made a miserable start to their IPL 2022 campaign, having won just one game in their first four matches. The squad was unable to provide a flawless effort in both sections of the game and lacked the firepower seen in previous editions. They now sit eighth in the points standings.

The major reason they finished bottom in this edition’s points table is the absence of important players who had performed admirably for the squad in the previous three-four editions. These players had a direct influence on the team’s overall performance and contributed to the team experiencing more success than failures. However, the retention regulations have not worked well for the five-time IPL winners, as they have been unable to re-sign their key players from the previous season during the mega auction.

In this article, we are going to talk about 3 players who Mumbai Indians should have retained this season.

Number 3. Quinton de Kock

The South African wicket-keeper batsman made his MI debut in the 2019 season after being acquired from Royal Challengers Bangalore. He made an early impression in the event, hammering 529 runs in 16 innings and finishing as the tournament’s third-leading run scorer. Quinton’s total effort aided MI in capturing their fourth IPL title.

In the next edition, he scored 503 runs in 16 innings and finished sixth in run scoring, contributing to MI becoming becoming the second team to retain their championship in the competition. Quinton de Kock scored 297 runs in 11 innings and had an ordinary season in the 2021 edition, while the squad also failed to secure a playoff berth. He is now pitching for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and has accumulated 188 runs in five innings.

Number 2. Trent Boult

Prior to the 2020 season, the MI team management recruited the services of New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult. Boult made an early impression, taking 25 wickets in 15 outings and finishing as the tournament’s third top wicket scorer. Boult took 13 wickets in 14 matches and had a better showing with the ball in the 2021 season than he had in the previous edition.

However, during the last two years, he has partnered with Jasprit Bumrah to pick up wickets in powerplay overs and assist MI in maintaining maximum pressure on the opponent in order to win matches. Boult is now playing for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 2022 season and has already claimed seven wickets in four matches. He concluded with stats of 2/30 in his most recent appearance for RR against Lucknow Super Giants.

Number 1. Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya, one of the greatest all-rounders in the country, has been the Mumbai Indians’ heartbeat since his debut in 2015. His contributions in all departments aided the club in a variety of important occasions, from late flourishes in the last overs to wicket-taking in the middle overs.

Hardik scored 402 runs and took 14 wickets in the 2019 edition, and he returned as the team’s leading match-winner in their title victory. He subsequently added 281 runs in 14 innings in the subsequent season, contributing to Mumbai’s sixth title success. Hardik is the Gujarat Titans’ captain in the 2022 edition, having scored 91 runs and taken two wickets in three matches.
