Umesh Yadav earns a one-of-a-kind distinction in the opener against CSK

Umesh Yadav, the veteran bowler, starred for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League’s opening game of the 2022 season (IPL). The right-arm fast bowler took two wickets and gave just 20 runs in four overs.

Yadav also earned a one-of-a-kind distinction in the 2022 IPL opener against Chennai Super Kings. The KKR pacer dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad in the first over of the match, becoming only the fourth bowler in league history to claim a wicket in the opening over of an IPL season. Brett Lee, Iqbal Abdullah, and Chaminda Vaas are the remaining three players who have accomplished this feat.

Yadav’s ball spun away from Gaikwad, and the right-hander attempted a sloppy cut shot. Nitish Rana, stationed in the slip cordon, completed the grab as Gaikwad walked back for a duck.

In the inaugural encounter of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by six wickets and nine balls. Batting first, Chennai amassed 131/5 in their 20-over quota, with MS Dhoni smashing a brilliant 50* off just 38 deliveries.

Apart from Yadav’s two wickets, Varun Chakravarthy and Andre Russell each took one wicket. Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) put on a 43-run opening stand to build the foundation for their side.

While Iyer averaged 16 runs per ball, Rahane smashed 44 runs off 34 deliveries with the willow in hand. Nitish Rana, skipper Shreyas Iyer, and Sam Billings all contributed significantly to the KKR side sailing through the objective without incident. Umesh Yadav was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance with the ball in hand for the KKR team.
