IPL 2022 – Analysing the Delhi Capitals ahead of the new season
Since the establishment of the Indian Premier League, the league has been dominated by two clubs. With the Mumbai Indians having won the trophy five times and the Chennai Super Kings having won it four times, these two clubs often enter each season as favourites. However, there have been a few teams who have come dangerously close to winning the championship but fell short. Delhi Capitals, one such squad, has demonstrated tremendous promise in recent years.
They’ve performed admirably to reach the playoffs in each of the previous three seasons. However, the 2020 finalists have been unable to make the final jump into gold. The Capitals, on the other hand, will be confident following the completion of the 2022 mega auction about their chances of breaking this curse and earning their first IPL trophy.
DC kept the lion’s share of its Indian core prior to the auctions. Their four retainers were Rishabh Pant (Rs 16 crore), Axar Patel (Rs 9 crore), Prithvi Shaw (Rs 7.5 crore), and Anrich Nortje (Rs 6.5 crore). They then made many major purchases at the auction table.
The Capitals spent a whopping Rs 10.75 crore for Indian bowler Shardul Thakur, making him their most expensive acquisition to date. Additionally, they acquired several international cricketers, including Mitchell Marsh (Rs 6.50 crore), David Warner (Rs 6.25 crore), Rovman Powell (Rs 2.8 crore), and Mustafizur Rahman (Rs 2.8 crore) (Rs 2 crore). Additionally, the franchisee invested in some well-known Indian talent, including Khaleel Ahmed (Rs 5.2 crore), Chetan Sakariya (Rs 4.2 crore), and Kuldeep Yadav (Rs 2 crore).
Explosive Batting lineup can set the tune for the tournament
The Delhi Capitals boast probably one of the season’s most lethal hitting combinations. The franchise that has leaned on the approach of having hard-hitting guys across their batting order in recent seasons has once again nailed it.
The Capitals boast one of the best starting combinations in the competition in Prithvi Shaw and David Warner. Opening the inning jointly will satisfy numerous criteria. They combine to make an extremely effective left-right hitting combination. They are both aggressive on the powerplay and are both established batters who have performed admirably throughout their stint in the IPL thus far.
However, DC is one of the few teams that features a succession of strong hard-hitting hitters. Rishabh Pant, their skipper, was one of the most sought-after cricketers in the world at the moment. Pant is a batsman who is capable of taking on any bowling attack and winning games on his own. Mitchell Marsh has perhaps been the world’s most consistent T20 batsman in recent years. He is equally adept at batting up the order or finishing innings.
Rovman Powell recently demonstrated what he is capable of in his West Indies debut against India. Thus, a batting set-up of this calibre seems capable of hunting down any target and also putting up massive totals while batting first.
Shortage of spin bowling options could prove expensive on slower tracks
The club that enjoyed several great spinners in recent seasons is a touch thin in that section heading into the 2022 season. With the departures of R Ashwin and Amit Mishra, Delhi have lost vital expertise.
Though they kept left-arm orthodox bowler Axar Patel, who has performed admirably for the Capitals in the past, the Capitals still lack a spinner capable of tearing apart teams on his day. Kuldeep Yadav, a left-arm chinaman bowler, is another outstanding bowler in their roster. However, Yadav’s success in the IPL has dipped in recent years. Due to his recent struggles, he frequently looks to lack confidence when a batter pursues him.
Apart from Patel and Yadav, the Delhi Capitals’ lineup is devoid of seasoned spinners, which might be costly considering how conducive Indian surfaces are to spin bowling.
Availability of top-quality all-rounders will be a bonus
Every excellent T20 club has a plethora of all-rounders in their dugout. Apart from Axar Patel, the Delhi Capitals have done well in that department, having signed Mitchell Marsh, Rovman Powell, and Lalit Yadav.
Marsh, who is predominantly a batsman, can be quite useful with his medium-fast bowling, as Powell is. They both possess a highly sought-after talent as seam bowling all-rounders. When one of the regular bowlers has a rough day, Marsh and Powell may chip in with the ball and relieve their captain of strain.
Axar is a seasoned spinner who has also demonstrated flashes of his bat-handling ability. The left-handed hitter is capable of playing second fiddle to a set batter but can also take the lead when necessary with his above-average stroke-making. Thus, with these several options at their disposal, Delhi Capitals remain in the game even if their renowned top-order falters or on a day when they struggle with the ball.
Batting collapse needs to be addressed in order to thrive in the tournament
Though the Capitals have an excellent hitting order, they may occasionally be forced to play without batters who can serve as an anchor in specific situations. Occasionally, the opponent may place a total on the board that appears to be problematic, since it is neither too large nor too tiny.
Such run chases typically succeed when the chasing team has a hitter capable of playing the entire innings without taking too many risks. With all of the Capitals’ dynamic hitters, they may find themselves in circumstances that need less aggression and more composure.
An anchor’s job is critical since they may help steady the ship if early wickets fall. The majority of DC batsmen want to attack the bowling immediately and might occasionally lack patience. Thus, the risk of such a tactic precipitating an unusual batting collapse is increased when the team lacks a player capable of preventing it.
The Delhi Capitals seem primed to be one of the front runners in this season of the IPL and have an excellent blend of youth and experience to band together and get some positive results under the belt and hopefully win their first ever IPL.
