IPL 2022 – Analysing the Chennai Super Kings for the upcoming season

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained a major portion of their core from the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) super auction. After keeping Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, the yellow army entered the auction with a total purse of INR 48 crore. Additionally, the franchise had a successful auction, as they were able to re-sign Deepak Chahar, Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa, and Dwayne Bravo, all of whom played significant parts in their title-winning season in 2021.

Due to the franchise’s failure to re-sign long-serving opener Faf du Plessis, CSK has brought in a substitute who is fairly comparable in the type of New Zealand opener Devon Conway. Mitchell Santner, a bowling all-rounder, and colleague Adam Milne were both signed by the yellow camp. Shivam Dube and Dwaine Pretorius, for one, will be vying for the job of an all-rounder with Dwayne Bravo, Jadeja, and Moeen Ali.

Deepak Chahar, who was acquired by CSK for a whopping INR 14 crore, is expected to spearhead the team’s bowling attack alongside Chris Jordan and Milne. CSK invested in Simarjeet Singh, Tushar Deshpande, Mukesh Choudhary, Subhranshu Senapati, Prashant Solanki, C Hari Nishaanth, N Jagadeesan, and K Bhagath Varma, among other local players.

Batting order experience and depth

CSK is well-known for prioritizing experience above youth. The franchise, led by MS Dhoni, has performed admirably in previous tournaments, except the 2020 season, when they finished eighth on the points table.

As has been seen in the past, close finishes are a common occurrence in the IPL. Thus, the squad’s extensive expertise will be a key strength in the 2017 IPL season. CSK’s lineup this year has several seasoned professionals, including Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, and Mitchell Santner, all of whom have been a part of this competition for years.

Another area of strength for the Super Kings is their batting depth. Devon Conway, the latest newcomer, is slated to start the innings with Ruturaj Gaikwad. Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa, and Moeen Ali will bat in the middle order. The franchise will also turn on MS Dhoni, Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shivam Dube for a great finish.

Death Bowling Woes

The franchise’s primary worry heading into the competition is death bowling. Chris Jordan and Tushar Deshpande have been drafted in to solve the issue, with all-rounder Dwayne Bravo assisting with the bowling unit. However, it has been seen previously that both Jordan and Bravo can be held to task.

Tushar Deshpande, a pace bowler who was a member of the Delhi Capitals last season, has bowled in the death overs for the franchise, but he is inexperienced and may also go for runs. As a result, Deepak Chahar will be tasked with the added duty of taking wickets at regular intervals and halting the run flow.

Additionally, it remains to be seen how captain Dhoni would utilize available spin alternatives such as Jadeja and Moeen during the match’s middle phase. Mitchell Santner, who is renowned for his ability to fox hitters, is another possibility for the first six over field constraints.

Great Platform for Indian Batsmen

With the T20 World Cup coming up this year, players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube have an excellent opportunity to make their case and earn the selectors’ trust. Uncapped players N Jagadeesan and Tushar Deshpande can also take advantage of the opportunity to display their abilities in the world’s largest T20 competition.

Following the end of the IPL 2022, the Indian cricket team will face South Africa in a five-match T20I series before traveling England for the rescheduled fifth Test match, three T20Is, and an equal number of ODIs before the start of the crucial T20 World Cup in 2022.

With selectors favoring in-form players, the individuals indicated above might perhaps improve their already small prospects of competing in the global tournament. It would be intriguing to watch who makes the most of this opportunity for the Indian batters.

The abundance of Foreign options

One of the concerns that the franchise will need to handle is finalizing the contracts of their four international players. While Moeen Ali and Dwayne Bravo are two international players who will almost certainly make the team. Additionally, the organization will be seeking to fill the vacuum left by Josh Hazlewood’s replacement by death-over specialist Chris Jordan.

With three positions already filled on the team, it would likely come down to a coin flip between Devon Conway, Dwaine Pretorius, and Mitchell Santner. However, New Zealand opener Conway, who has demonstrated his mettle at the international level, is expected to be the preferred opener with Gaikwad.

We are officially going to witness the beginning of a new era of the IPL and the Chennai Super Kings will have to get their final lineup in order before the first game against the Kolkata Knight Riders. They have won the title 4 times already and will be looking to get level with the Mumbai Indians (5 Championships) this year.
