Shreyas Iyer is named the ICC’s February 2022 Player of the Month

The ICC just announced the ICC players of the month for February 2022, with Shreyas Iyer of India being named men’s player of the month and Amelia Kerr of New Zealand being named women’s player of the month. Iyer was sensational in the just-finished T20I series against Sri Lanka, scoring 57*, 74*, and 73* in three games. The right-hander appeared to be in top form and relished the job of batting third.

Apart from his dominance against Sri Lanka, the 27-year-old has been in and out of the Indian side for the last year following a shoulder injury suffered against England. He began his comeback with an 80 in the penultimate ODI against West Indies. He responded admirably and won the monthly award ahead of UAE batter Vriitya Aravind and Nepal all-rounder Dipendra Singh Airee. Russell Arnold, a former Sri Lankan cricketer who was on the voting panel, heaped admiration on Iyer for his recent performance.

The white ferns would have been overjoyed to have discovered a gem in the form of teenager Amelia Kerr, who has been exceptional for the New Zealand women’s team thus far with both bat and ball. The 21-year-old finished with scores of 33, 119*, 67, 68*, and 66 in five One-Day Internationals against India in preparation for the Women’s World Cup in 2022. She also took seven wickets in the series. Kerr defeated India’s Mithali Raj and Deepthi Sharma in the women’s player of the month poll.
