Mike Hesson explains why Virat Kohli stepped down as RCB Captain
Faf du Plessis has been selected the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s new captain, only two weeks before the IPL 2022 season begins on March 26. Virat Kohli, who captained the organization for nine seasons from 2013 to 2021, will be his successor.
Meanwhile, RCB Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson has praised Kohli’s achievements as a leader to the franchise. At the same time, Hesson made it plain that both Virat and AB de Villiers, the team’s past batting great, had recommended Faf du Plessis as the future captain.
“As a captain, Virat has given everything he has to this franchise. He has contributed his entire being. It goes without saying that when you retire from a job, you want to take a break. He wants to enjoy his time as a senior player and batsman at RCB, and we appreciate that,” Hesson stated at the RCB Unbox event.
Despite being the second-highest run-getter in the 2021 season, with 633 runs from 16 matches and a key role in CSK’s fourth IPL victory, the experienced South African hitter was released by the defending champions Chennai Super Kings.
The three-time finalists acquired him for INR 7 crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction last month. As the Bengaluru-based franchise seeks its first Indian Premier League title, he will be expected to lead them to new heights. On March 27, RCB will face Punjab Kings in Mumbai to begin their season.
